Adding Wildflowers to Your Garden

Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library 121 S. Prairieville St., Athens, TX, United States

Henderson County Master Gardener Association will offer a free presentation, “Wildflowers for Texas”, on Tuesday, September 19, 5:30 p.m., at the Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library, 121 S. Prairieville, Athens. Learn how to grow wildflowers to add to your garden, or how to start a dedicated wildflower garden from scratch. Master Gardener Judy Haldeman will explain the types of wildflowers that grow well in East Texas, how to get almost continuous blooms from wildflowers throughout the year, and how to properly harvest wildflower seeds. Haldeman has been in love with wildflowers ever since she moved into her current home located on acreage. She also appreciates the numerous pollinators that come to visit her wildflowers. She sows numerous wildflower seeds every year, and her landscape blooms with a jewel box of colors. Haldeman has come to learn that each year her garden will be different, with a varying display of wildflowers transforming the landscape. She feels that part of the fun is that sense of surprise at seeing which wildflowers will bloom in abundance from year to year. Saving seed from the wildflowers in your garden is a cost saving technique which can increase your blooms from year to year. Autumn is the time to sow seeds for many wildflowers. Haldeman will explain how and when to harvest your own wildflower seeds from matured blooms. At the end of the program, Haldeman will raffle off some plants. Attendees will also receive seed packets to take home in order to start their own wildflower garden. Come hear how you can make your own landscape a glorious picture of wildflower blooms. You, too, may become wild about wildflowers. This presentation is a part of Henderson County Master Gardener Association’s ‘Learn at the Library’ series, held on the third Tuesday of every month.
